About TheraHive

TheraHive teaches skills to improve mental health in a live online setting with trained coaches. Our short-term blended learning courses give students scheduling flexibility while ensuring they get the individualized attention needed to attain their goals. Small groups, affordability, and scientifically proven skills are the core of our program.

The company was co-founded in 2020 by; Dr. Alicia Smart, a leading practitioner of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and the owner of the premier DBT Center in the San Francisco area; Jesse Finkelstein, a postdoctoral student at Rutgers University’s DBT Lab and the creator of a DBT Skills game called The Game of Real Life; and Roland Smart, a marketing executive that has brought companies from fundraising through acquisition, and veteran of the online education industry.

TheraHive is a response to the fact that we’re in a distress decade, with one in five Americans suffering from a mental health issue. We believe that the only way to effectively address this crisis is through a proven, accessible, affordable, and scalable solution. Purely self-paced programs are ineffective, and individual therapy doesn’t scale—our programs blend the best of self-paced programs with a proven skills-based group education model. The stigma around investing in one’s own mental health is declining in the face of this crisis and programs like TheraHive present a new approach and opportunity to achieve mental well being for students of all ages.

Our Values

Dialectical Thinking

At the core of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is the concept of dialectical thinking – the ability to hold two seemingly contradictory ideas simultaneously and find the synthesis between them. We strive to bring dialectics to our work, promoting a culture of balance, flexibility, and integration. This approach helps us navigate complexities, embrace change, and continually improve our practices and outcomes.

Evidence-Based and Innovative

We believe in leveraging and advancing mental health practices that are proven to work in both research settings and the real world. Taking a dialectical approach to practicing evidence-based interventions means combining established methods with a willingness to explore and try new approaches that align with the principles of DBT. We focus on evaluating our efforts based on outcomes to ensure that everything we do is effective and beneficial.

Mindful, Kind, and Connected

We recognize that meaningful social interactions and relationships are critical to improving mental health. Mindfulness and kindness are essential behaviors for fostering interpersonal effectiveness, trust, and focus. We strive to model these behaviors, promoting a compassionate and supportive environment within our team and in our interactions with others. Mental health cannot thrive in isolation; it is through relationships and social support that individuals find the strength and resilience to overcome challenges.

Work Remotely

We are a fully-remote company, meaning you can work from anywhere that suits you best. Our operating systems are built to support remote work efficiently. We engage in a lot of asynchronous work to allow for flexibility, but we also make time for regular meetings to stay connected and aligned. At our core, we value balance, flexibility, and innovation in our work processes.

Education Benefit

Many of our team members are motivated to work here because they are passionate about mental health. Following this, we make our program accessible to all our team members for free.
