As I logged into my first virtual meeting, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. This was the start of a journey that would shape my professional future in unexpected ways. In this post, I want to share my internship experience at TheraHive, from daily responsibilities and team culture to the lessons I learned along the way. By sharing my story, I hope to provide insights and encouragement to anyone considering or starting an internship with TheraHive.
Daily Routine and Responsibilities
My internship with TheraHive was fully remote. A typical day started with a quick check-in, reviewing tasks on our work management platform (Asana). I organized my time by focusing on tasks for today, this week, and next week. This approach helped me prioritize and stay productive.
One of my main projects involved influencer marketing and prototyping web experiences for our new initiatives. This included market research, drafting messages, contacting influencers, and brainstorming and designing prototypes. Staying productive at home required discipline but tools like Asana helped track tasks and set clear boundaries between work and personal time.
Communication and Collaboration
Effective communication was key to success. I relied heavily on Slack messaging and regular video calls to stay connected with my team and ensure everyone was on the same page. My weekly schedule included a one-on-one call with CEO Roland Smart, marketing team calls, and other shadowing opportunities such as Strategic Development and Product Enhancement calls. These sessions not only allowed me to observe how colleagues collaborate but also gave me the chance to participate in various projects.
For instance, by joining the strategic calls, I took on designing the experience for our Free Resources Page. I also worked on understanding sales performance to analyze common patterns and improve our operations. During these calls, I learned to prepare agendas in advance and take notes to keep track of action items and follow-ups.
Skills and Knowledge Gained
Thanks to the support of CEO Roland Smart, I honed my skills in not only executing tasks but also understanding them from a holistic and managerial perspective. Through influencer marketing, I improved my market research and cold messaging skills. Working with Figma helped me develop a better eye for design, and I learned to communicate more clearly and concisely.
Working at a mental health education company like TheraHive also taught me the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. TheraHive allows all team members to participate in their program which allowed me to level up my own mental health skills while providing me with more context on how students experience our program.
Personal Reflections
This internship was an incredible experience. Working with a team of smart and talented people fueled my inner fire and helped me grow both personally and professionally. It solidified my interest in marketing and clarified the type of work environment I thrive in. One major lesson stood out: proactivity is key. Being able to pivot and adjust to new circumstances is invaluable in any career.
Applying this mindset, Roland and I submitted TheraHive to Venture Lab, a startup accelerator program at IE University, and we were thrilled to be selected in summer 2023. I also made it a point to continuously learn new skills while working on various tasks.
Advice for Future Remote Interns
Working with TheraHive has helped me sharpen my professional skills, especially in marketing and project management. It's been a big boost to my career from day one. Now, I am excited to be heading to an internship with Cello, a tech startup in Munich, Germany. Thanks to everything I’ve learned at TheraHive, I am confident to do a great job at my new internship and continue to dive deeper into the world of marketing.
